a) Interim protection of the industrial designs or models, in the UAE

According to the UAE law if the owner of an industrial design or model wants to obtain an interim protection for the industrial design or model, which may become a subject matter of a registration certificate in connection with the products that such owner wishes to exhibit in any exhibition in the UAE:

• The owner of the industrial design or model, prior to exhibiting such products, should apply to the Industrial Property Department (the “Department”) in the form as prepared for such purpose together with a brief statement of the description, two copies of the industrial drawing or model and their relevant products.
• The Department may require from the applicant to provide any further statement as it may seems necessary.
• Upon confirming that the applicant has entered the products to the exhibition, the Department will give the applicant an interim protection certificate for that invention.
• The certificate will secure the applicant’s rights arising from the protection instrument for a period of no more than 6 months from the opening date of the exhibition.

b) Long term protection for the industrial designs or models in the UAE

• The applicant needs to provide the application in the prepared form to the Department.


• All the documents which are mentioned in the REQUIREMENTS FOR FILING A INDUSTRIAL DESIGN OR MODEL APPLICATION should be attached to the application.


• Upon examination of the application, if legal requirements are not fulfilled, then the Department will issue a resolution rejecting the application and stating the reasons for such rejection.


• The applicant will be notified of the resolution by a registered letter.


• The applicant may object to such resolution by applying to the Committee at the Department within 60 days from the date of receiving the notice.


• If upon examining the application, it is found that it fulfills the legal requirements, the Department will accept the application and will notify the applicant thereof by a registered letter.


• The applicant will be required to pay the charges for the publication of granting the royalty certificate within 60 days from the date of receiving such notice.


• If the applicant fails to pay the publication charges within the 60 days, the application register will be marked to consider the application void in accordance with a resolution by the Director of the Department.
