In the United Arab Emirates the law which deals with granting Patents is the Federal Law No. 17 of 2002 on Regulating and Protecting Industrial Property for Patents, Designs and Industrial Models. This law came into effect in November 2002 and repealed the Federal Law No. 44 of 1992.

The UAE is a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and this legislation of 2002 has brought UAE up to the criteria of the agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Industrial Property Rights (TRIPS)

The UAE is also a member of the Paris convention for the Protection of industrial Property (1967) and furthermore a contracting state for the Patent Cooperation Treaty PCT. This Treaty makes it possible to seek patent protection for an invention simultaneously in each of a large number of countries by filing an “International Patent Application”.

The application of a Patent registration should be submitted to the Industrial Property Department. The Patent remains protected for twenty years from the date of filing the application.
